Professor Daniele Tognetto Nominated for the 2026 Special Award of the Association of Polish Ophthalmic Surgeons

During this year’s Congress of the Association of Polish Ophthalmic Surgeons (SCOP) in Warsaw, the Society will once again present its prestigious Special Award, granted annually to outstanding personalities who have made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of ophthalmology. This year, the nominee for the international award is Professor Daniele Tognetto, Chairman of the Eye Clinic at the University of Trieste, Italy, and one of Europe’s most distinguished ophthalmic surgeons and scientists.

For more than three decades, Professor Tognetto has been shaping the development of modern ophthalmic surgery. Throughout his career, he has performed more than 20,000 surgical procedures, including cataract, retinal, corneal and glaucoma surgery. He is internationally recognized as a leading expert in cataract and vitreoretinal surgery while maintaining extensive experience across virtually the entire spectrum of contemporary ophthalmic surgery.

Professor Tognetto’s scientific achievements include more than 170 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters and active participation in the world’s leading ophthalmology congresses. He has also performed more than forty live surgical demonstrations at major international scientific meetings, sharing his expertise with ophthalmic surgeons from around the world.

Combining Clinical Excellence with Artificial Intelligence

One of Professor Tognetto’s major research interests is the application of artificial intelligence in ophthalmology. His scientific work explores the use of AI-based technologies in the diagnosis and management of ocular diseases, as well as innovations in intraocular lenses and biomaterials. His research demonstrates that he is not only an outstanding surgeon but also a scientist helping to shape the future of ophthalmology.

Throughout his career, Professor Tognetto has received numerous prestigious distinctions, including two Best Paper Awards from the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). He has served as President of the Italian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (AICCER), President of the Italian Society of Vitreoretinal Surgeons (GIVRE), and President of the Triveneta Society of Ophthalmology. He currently holds the title of Honorary President of the Triveneta Society of Ophthalmology.

He is highly respected as an outstanding lecturer and an exceptional surgeon who generously shares his knowledge and practical experience with successive generations of Polish ophthalmic surgeons.”

Professor Robert Rejdak, President of the Association of Polish Ophthalmic Surgeons, also emphasizes that Professor Daniele Tognetto is „a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of world ophthalmology, a renowned surgeon, an eminent scientist, and one of the leading authorities in ophthalmology in Italy, Europe and worldwide.” He also highlights Professor Tognetto’s long-standing cooperation with Polish ophthalmologists and his remarkable ability to combine scientific excellence with practical surgical expertise, which he shares during lectures and live surgical demonstrations.

The nomination of Professor Daniele Tognetto reflects the Association’s recognition of his outstanding contribution to ophthalmic surgery, scientific innovation, international education and the advancement of global collaboration in ophthalmology.
